I walked in to the kitchen a few days ago, and my wife greeted me with this: "Okay, can I tell you something that really concerns me? These green beans spark and flame in the microwave."This prompted me to do a little bit of investigation on the subject. And yes, if you're wondering, I was putting off doing other more important things in order perform said research.
It appears that some vegetables contain high amounts of certain elements and minerals that, when the conditions are right, will make them spark and even ignite in the microwave. In my opinion, this is awesome news for green beans. Some excitement, unpredictability, and danger would do well for a vegetable whose reputation is otherwise pretty bland.
So, if you're needing a way to spice up dinner time, go on, throw some green beans in the microwave, turn up the power level, nuke 'em for 15 or 20 seconds, and let the good times roll!

The frozen beans I was cooking in the microwave the other day sparked and ignited, too! My three-year-old was fascinated, but maybe I'll start using the stove for those!
Oh come on... don't start cooking them on the stove. You only live once. Keep cooking them in the microwave. Show your 3 year old how exciting green beans can be.
Glad I'm not the only to witness this! LOL I had frozen ones do this and fresh ones from my garden! So fun!
i had this happen to me and I agree the minerals in them cause them to spark. it makes sense because I used some store fresh green beans, I am surprised that frozen beans have the minerals still available. Maybe I saw fireworks compared to the frozen veggies.. in any regard, too much fun!
It also seems to do the same with Lima beans. Even saw a burn mark on the outside.
thanks for this. I'm an early 30s Dad who just googled green beans spark microwave, and found my answer here.
I'm a columnist and wrote about this a while back because I too, had FLAMES from my bag o' beans :)
